3M Open and Cazoo Classic picks

There was a thrilling finish to the Open Championship last week as Cameron Smith’s superb putting enabled him to overhaul Rory McIlroy in the final round to deny favourite-backers at St Andrews.

This week might lack the star quality of competitors aiming to lift the Claret Jug but that doesn’t mean there is an absence of value betting opportunities for the two headline tournaments. On the PGA Tour the 3M Open takes place at the TPC Twin Cities course in Minnesota, while the DP Tour stays in Britain for the Cazoo Open at Hillside Golf Club in Southport.

Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im are among the predicted front-runners teeing it up in Minnesota, along with former tennis star Mardy Fish, while Robert MacIntyre, Oliver Bekker and Thriston Lawrence head the market for the challenge of the links course in Southport .

Right time for rookie Riley

It looks only a matter of time before Davis Riley gets his first win on the PGA Tour and it could come while many of the big fish – Mardy excepted – are away.

Riley should be refreshed having taken a break since the Travelers Championship in late June and he has had a really strong season without recording his maiden Tour success.

He has had six top-10 finishes and is up to 23rd in the FedEx Cup standings. Back in March, he blew a two-shot lead in the Valspar Championship going into the final round but he has won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour so he knows how to finish the job.

Tip: Davis Riley @ 22/1 with bet365

Tringale in good shape

Cameron Tringale came flying out of the traps a couple of weeks ago at the Scottish Open, firing a 61 in the first round, and he had a nice final round of 69 at St Andrews to put him in decent shape for a tilt at the 3M title.

Tringale has had five top-10 finishes last season, including at the Scottish Open, and finished tied for 16th in this tournament last season.

Tip: Cameron Tringale @ 1/28 with bet365

Tarren an outsider to follow

The last three winners of the 3M Open – Cameron Champ, Michael Thompson and Matt Wolff – all started at triple-figure odds so it makes sense to have at least one outsider in the betting portfolio.

Driving distance is an asset this week and Callum Tarren is one of the longest hitters in the field. He tied for sixth at the John Deere and was T22 at the Barracuda last week, which suggests he is playing well enough to be of interest.

Tip: Callum Tarren @ 125/1 with bet365

Armitage can make his mark

There is a strong British contingent for the Cazoo Classic, which used to be known as the English Open, and Marcus Armitage is one who will fancy his chances of having a decent week.

Armitage made the cut at St Andrews and the man born in Salford should be right at home in his native north-west.

The 35-year-old played perfectly to qualify for the Open in the first place, has won on the European Tour last year at the Porsche Open and is likely to enjoy this course.

Tip: Marcus Armitage @ 33/1 with bet365

Love of links points to Olesen

Clearly there have been off-course issues for Thorbjorn Olesen, who was involved in a very public court case that caused him much embarrassment and led to him dropping out of the top 500 in the world rankings.

Olesen was back to winning ways at The Belfry in May, taking the British Masters in dramatic fashion, and we know he loves links golf.

One of his six European Tour wins came at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and at his best this is the kind of field he would fancy beating.

Tip: Thorbjorn Olesen @ 22/1 with bet365

Southgate has the form to figure

Matthew Southgate heads to Southport with two top-20 finishes in his previous four starts and looks a lively each-way runner in a field which lacks depth.

The Essex golfer enjoys links golf and as an amateur won the 2010 St Andrews Links Trophy.

Tip: Matthew Southgate @ 70/1 with bet365
