Southgate says Germany remain ‘benchmark’ at international level

Antonio Rudiger has insisted England’s “great quality” will make them genuine contenders to win the World Cup.

Germany defender Rudiger claims Gareth Southgate also has the luxury of strength in depth which means “big names” cannot even get into the squad. Former Chelsea center half Rudiger, 29, who has just joined Real Madrid, has been part of the Germany set-up for eight years and admits this is the strongest he can ever remember England.

Rudiger got a close-up look when England played their old rivals in Munich and he says the likes of Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish mean Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford no longer even get picked. World Cup star Rudiger said: “The England squad has great quality. It’s like Saka comes out, Grealish comes in. I saw a lot of big, big names were on the bench.

“England have a lot to be optimistic about for the future. I think you people don’t need to worry too much. The English players are definitely getting better. You have to think about it like this, that players like Rashford and Sancho didn’t even make the squad.

“That tells you that you have a lot of depth in the English squad and you have big, big players like Harry Kane, Sterling and Grealish – big names, big players.”

Rudiger also pointed to England being able to change the game in Munich from the bench as potentially becoming a major factor at the World Cup. Grealish came on, changed the game and Rudiger says that they can win games in tournaments and be vital. “I think Grealish gave the team a real impact – because he came on and he gave good one v ones and everything,” said Rudiger. “He is a very dangerous player and those sort of players are going to win you games.”

Rudiger claims that Germany dominated England on Tuesday night but ultimately it is the result which counts and defeat at last summer’s Euros – when Gareth Southgate’s men triumphed at Wembley – still haunts them. “The last time you beat us, I remember you beat us! smiled Rudiger.

“I think we were the more dominant team, I think both sides had quite good chances – big save from Manuel Neuer and also we made a couple of good chances but I thought we controlled the game.”

Rudiger did claim that Germany have managed to pull off a masterstroke after Jamal Musiala – who had represented England at under-21 level – to switch allegiances to Germany. “He is very special,” said Rudiger. “He’s a really good player and he’ll get better and better in the future.”

Rudiger admits he will miss English football after leaving English football to join Real Madrid – and particularly the physical side of the game. He added: “I will miss the toughness. It’s just that every single game you cannot underestimate the team you play against. This is what I will miss the most.”
