Gareth Bale’s exit from Real Madrid after nine seasons – and the expiration of his contract – had many wondering if the Welsh star would retire. Indeed, multiple sources including ESPN claimed that Bale was ready to call it quits if his Wales side failed to qualify for the World Cup.

But Wales this morning beat Ukraine 1-0 to reach the World Cup for the first time in 64 years, with a Bale free-kick deflected for an own goal.

“The result is the greatest in Welsh football history,” Bale said afterwards. “We’re going to a World Cup!

“It means everything, what dreams are made of, we’ve been working towards it since I first came in here.

“Words can’t describe how we feel at the moment.”

Before the game, Bale joked that he had plenty of contract offers. “Yeah, I’ve got loads,” he laughed.

Bale has been strongly linked to the MLS, where the season runs until October, or Nov. 5 if the club qualifies for the MLS Cup. That would be a solid preparation ahead of the World Cup, which starts on Nov. 21.

The forward has also been linked with a short-term deal with Championship side Cardiff City.

But American actor and producer Rob McElhenny, who co-owns lower-league Welsh side Wrexham AFC alongside Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, jokingly took to social media to offer Bale a move to the team which plays in England’s fifth tier.

Wales will join England, Iran and the United States in Group B in Qatar later this year.

Manchester United’s departing midfielder Nemanja Matic is on the verge of inking a deal with Italian giants Roma, according to multiple reports.

Matic will once again meet with manager Jose Mourinho, having joined his Chelsea side in January 2014, before following him to United in mid-2017.

After five years at the club, the defensive midfielder will depart for free when his contract expires.

The 33-year-old Serbian star has made 189 appearances for the Red Devils.

Tottenham’s Stephen Bergwijn has hinted at an exit from the club over a lack of minutes at domestic level.

The Dutch winger made 25 Premier League appearances this season for Spurs but has struggled to secure his place in the first XI, particularly since Dejan Kulucevski arrived in January.

Bergwijn has not started since January 23 and is keen on a move to secure playing time ahead of the World Cup, with his place in further doubt following the pending arrival of versatile Ivan Perisic.

Bergwijn said: “It’s difficult for me. I play well at the National Team but when I return to the club people turn a blind eye to me. I need to find a solution, so I could leave”.

Dutch giants Ajax had two offers rejected in January by the London club and have reportedly come back with another bid in the past week.

Spurs paid €30m to PSV Eindhoven for Bergwijn in January 2020, and are now looking for €25m for the player.

“Ajax? I keep all options open”, Bergwijn added.

Chelsea are closing in on signing Barcelona’s mega-money flop Ousmane Dembele when the winger comes off contract on June 30.

Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in August 2017 for an initial fee of €105 million ($A157m) – at the time the equal-second most expensive deal alongside fellow Frenchman Paul Pogba.

The deal also included a reported €40 million in add-ons, with Barcelona setting a €400 buyout clause on the young gun.

But Dembele suffered with repeated injuries and never lived up to his promise at the club.

In five years, I have managed just 150 appearances, with 32 goals and 34 assists. This season was his most productive of him, leading La Liga with 13 assists in 21 league appearances and adding two goals.

Barcelona still have an offer on the table to retain the 25-year-old, but Chelsea – led by Dembele’s former Dortmund coach in Thomas Tuchel – have reportedly offered the talented forward a four-year deal.

With PSG pulling out of the running, it appears to be a choice between staying in Spain and a meeting with his old manager in England.
