The International Boxing Organization released their monthly newsletter for June 2021, consisting of all the latest stories surrounding the respected independent boxing governing body, featuring the latest updates on Joshua-Usyk rematch; Briton Sam Eggington’s maiden world title shot; Hannah Rankin’s historic win for female fighters, and more:
Joshua vs. Usyk II
IBO World Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk and former World Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua are looking to Saudi Arabia for their much anticipated rematch this Summer.
Eggington vs. Zysk
‘Savage’ set on slaughter versus Zysk.
Birmingham’s Sam Eggington (31-7, 18 KOs), a two-time ‘Fight of the Year’ winner and firm crowd favorite thanks to his all-action fighting style, looks set to deliver another crowd-pleasing performance as he challenges for the IBO Super Welterweight Championship against undefeated Pole Przemyslaw Zysk (18-0, 6 KOs).
Both fighters have a reputation for never taking a backwards step, making this another potential ‘Fight of the Year’ nominee for Eggington and an encounter likely to produce many a highlight-reel moment.
Previous super-welterweight titleholders include Sergio Martinez; Erislandy Lara; Jarrett Hurd; Julian Williams; and Jeison Rosario. Only two British boxers have held this title in this century – Steve Conway, back in 2006, over 18 years ago; and Richard Williams in 2001.
The full fight card features Adam ‘The Assassin’ Azim in World Youth title fight, plus Olympic bronze medalist Karriss Artingstall in her highly anticipated pro debut… read more
Rankin prevails in historic night for the Scots
IBO World Super Welterweight champion Hannah Rankin stopped Alejandra Ayala last month in the 10th round to retain her titles and hopes for a match with domestic rival Natasha Jonas before the end of the year. This was the first time in boxing history a female boxer headlined a fight in Scotland.
The return of “Caskilla”
IBO World Welterweight champion Jessica “Caskilla” McCaskill is back in the gym with a June 25th date with IBO #1 ranked Alma Ibarra in San Antonio, Texas on DAZN.
‘Babyface’ Bormann bests La Bronca to become beltholder
Undefeated Sarah Bormann (14-0, 7KO) scored a unanimous decision shutout over Ana Arrazola (28-15-3, 14KO) this past weekend in Germany to claim the IBO World Minimumweight title.
Mexican Arrazola, now 42, was a former WBC Silver champion and multiple world title contender. The southpaw known as ‘La Bronco’ was bested handily with all three scores returned as 100-89 against. There was no knockdown at any point, but the additional point deduction came in the fifth for holding.
The 32-year-old German improved to 14-0 with seven knockouts, recording six unanimous decision wins in a row.
Odessa set for maiden title defense
“La Bella Bestia,” undefeated IBO World Bantamweight champion Melissa Odessa Parker (5-0, 2KO) makes her maiden title defense in her home state Texas next month when she faces undefeated Canadian Mikenna Tansley (5-0, 1KO).
Both boxers are in their thirties and unbeaten in five fights.
Punch-up in Paris
Casey “Lady Hawaiian Punch” Morton (10-2-3, 2KO) heads to Paris to face Chile’s Daniela “La Leona” Asenjo (11-3-3, 2KO) on June 7th for the IBO World Super Flyweight title.
The 38-year-old Hawaiian had a checkered start to her career during 2014-2016, winning just four from her first seven fights. She lost her first attempt at world honors in her 13th professional contest in 2019, but has since one two on the bounce.
Her Chilean counterpart is 31 with just three defeats from 17 bouts. She challenged for a world title in her last fight, taking the champion to a mixed decision draw.
