ISLE OF WIGHT MIDWEEK FOOTBALL: SHANKLIN CLOSE TO WITHIN 2 POINTS OF W&B AT TOP OF DIV 1 – Island Echo

Shanklin have set up an exciting finale to the end of the Isle of Wight football season by beating Binstead at the County Ground on Tuesday evening (3rd May).

The Seasiders now have the chance to win a treble of trophies: IW Division 1, the Memorial Cup, and the Challenge Cup.

Shanklin included a couple of regular Wessex League players in the side that faced Binstead: Cowes forward Ji Nash and Newport full back Neo Lamb. Binstead called on the services of Cowes central defender Henry West and Newport striker Jared Wetherick.

Shanklin opened the scoring against the visiting Binstead side through Ryan Hill, who rose above the Binstead defense to convert a 10th minute corner (1-0). Hill then had a couple of further long range on goal which he sent flying over the crossbar.

Kyle Drew then added to the home side’s lead in the 27th minute, sending a cross crashing into the goal at the near post (2-0). A minute before half time, Shanklin’s George Carter-Knight beat 2 defenders on the edge of the penalty area before dispatching a rasping shot inside the near post to score the goal-of-the-game.

7 minutes into the 2nd half, Shanklin extended their lead when Kyle Drew was fouled inside the Binstead penalty area, and George Carter-Knight converted the resulting spot kick (4-0).

Binstead then had keeper Tom McInnes to thank for not falling further behind when he saved further goal attempts from Carter-Knight and Jordan Cook. In the 55th minute, Binstead pulled a goal back when Ryan Hill diverted a long ball into his own goal (4-1).

In the 61st minute, Carter-Knight hit the crossbar with a curling shot and then had a further goal attempt stopped by McInnes. 15 minutes from the final whistle, Henry West thought he had scored for the visitors, but had his ‘goal’ ruled offside.

After the game, Shanklin manager Paul Haward said:

“The destination of the Division 1 title is in our hands now. It’s up to others to say whether we can catch W&B. Mathematically, we can.”

Shanklin now have 57 points from their 22 games and are 2 points behind leaders Whitecroft & Barton with 2 games left to play. Next Wednesday (11th May), Shanklin play W&B at the County Ground in the game certain to decide the destination of the Division 1 title.

Binstead have now completed all their league fixtures and finish the season in 3rd place with 42 points from 24 games.

Cowes Sport Reserves 1-3 Bembridge

Bembridge beat the Yachtsmen at Westwood Park to finish their season in 4th place with 40 points. Liam Harper, Michael Brown, and Ant Kettle were on target for Bembridge with Josh Neale scoring for the home side. Cowes Sports have also completed all their fixtures and end their season in 8th place with 29 points.

West Wight 1-1 Brading Town

The Romans continue their climb up the Division 1 table by drawing with West Wight at Camp Road thanks to a goal by Dan Vale, his 32nd of the season. Brading are now 5th with 34 points and 3 games remaining; West Wight are 7th on 31 points with 1 further fixture to complete.
