Big 12 Tournament staying in Kansas City for at least two additional years

Officials with the Big 12 Conference announced Friday that the Big 12 Basketball Tournament will remain in Kansas City with a new two-year extension. means Kansas City will remain the host site for the Phillips 66 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships through at least 2027.“Kansas City’s long affiliation with the Big 12 Conference entered an exciting new chapter in 2020 when we welcomed the women’s tournament back to Kansas City, ” said Kathy Nelson, President and CEO of the Kansas City Sports Commission and Visit KC in a statement. “Our city’s passion for basketball is on full display during the Big 12 Basketball Championships and we could not be more excited to continue our tradition of excellence when hosting these tournaments.”Kansas City’s Power & Light District transforms every year to celebrate the return of the tournament, with street pole banners, a specially-wrapped streetcar, events in Barney Allis Plaza and the KC Live block. Plus, Kansas City plays host to the Big 12 Big Q barbecue contest and the Big 12 Run. “Kansas City has been a valued partner, showing a true dedication to making these tournaments the best postseason basketball event in the country,” stated Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby in Friday’s release. “As we prepare to welcome four new schools in the coming years, I’m confident Kansas City will continue to deliver a first-class Championship experience for our athletes, administrators, fans and partners.”The men’s tournament, played at the T- Mobile Center in 2022, draws an average of 18,000 people each year. Officials also said the 2022 women’s tournament, held down the street at Municipal Auditorium, recorded its highest number of attendees for the women’s basketball quarterfinals since 2013. Full capacity seating returned to the tournament in 2022 after the pandemic. Fans showed up to root on their Big 12 teams even in heavy snow.
