Austin- No. 12 Men’s Tennis advanced the NCAA Tournament Second Round with 4-0 sweep of Idaho at the Texas Tennis Center on Friday. It marks the ninth-straight year the Longhorns have reached the second round where they will play No. 34 LSU on Saturday.
Texas won the doubles point at Nos. 3 and 1 and followed with singles wins by sophomore Siem Woldeab at No. 4, Junior Chih Chi Huang at No. 6, and sophomore Cleeve Harper at No. 5.
After doubles, Woldeab put together an efficient 6-1, 6-0 win over Matteo Masala. Woldeab went on a 3-0 run, including a pair of breaks, to start the match before Masala got one break back on a deuce point. However, Woldeab got the deuce-point break right back to start a 9-0 run to his win and a 2-0 Texas lead.
Moments later, Huang extended that lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Alex Asenov. Huang opened the match on a 5-0 run before Asenov took one game on serve, but Huang proceeded on another 5-0 run to close the set and establish a 4-0 lead in the second. The rest of the match stayed on serve from there with Huang closing it out for the win.
Not long after that, Harper came up with the clinch by downing Mario Duron, 6-1, 6-4. After Harper held serve to open the match, Duron won his only game of the first set on a deuce-point hold in the next game. Harper then set out on a 7-0 run to win the frame and post a 2-0 lead in the second. Duron was able to win each of his next two serves on deuce points as the rest of the match remained on serve to the final.
That left three singles matches unfinished, all of which saw the Longhorns win their opening set, 6-3, including sophomore No. 69 Eliot Spizziri at No. 1, freshman No. 34 Pierre-Yves Bailly at No. 2 and senior No. 92 Richard Ciamarra at No. 3. Spizzirri was facing Francisco Bascon with their second set staying on serve to a 5-4 lead to Bascon when play stopped. Bailly squared off against Francisco Gay and used a 3-0 run for a 3-1 lead in the second which he maintained to 5-3 when the match was completed. Ciamarra’s match against Bruno Casio had the same score as Spizzirri’s, but used different route to get there in the second set that included five deuce points overall and a string four-straight breaks from a 3-2 lead for Ciamarra to 4-4. Casino then held in the last game for a 5-4 lead.
Earlier in doubles, the Longhorns started things off with a 6-2 win by Huang and sophomore Eshan Talluri over Gay at Duron at No. 3. Idaho opened 1-0 on serve, but Texas went on a 3-0 run with a break in the third game. The Vandals picked up one more game with a deuce-point hold to pull within 3-2, but the Longhorns took it from there with another 3-0 run to the win.
Minutes later, the No. 8 duo of Spizzirri and Woldeab clinched the point with a 6-3 victory over Bascon and Casino at No. 1. After the first three games stayed on serve, Texas broke for a 3-1 lead that they consolidated to 4-1 on serve. The last four games also stayed on serve as Spizzirri served out on a deuce point for the win.
In the remaining match, the No. 4 pair of Ciamarra and Harper led Asenov and Masala, 5-3, when play stopped. Idaho used an opening game break to get out to a 2-0 lead, but Texas got the break back at 2-2 and then held for a 3-2 lead. The Vandals also held to even it again, but the Longhorns took the final two games with a break at 5-3.
The Longhorns next face No. 34 LSU on Saturday at noon CT at the Texas Tennis Center for the right to move on to the sweet 16 against the winner of the Ann Arbor Regional.
