Phil Mickelson pulled off a brilliant win at Kiawah Island to claim his sixth Major win at the PGA Championship last year but it remains to be seen if he’ll play following his controversies off the course recently.

Another bubbly storyline is whether Tiger Woods will play.

The 15-time Major winner shocked world sport by starring at the Masters and the legendary player won his fourth PGA Championship title at Southern Hills in 2007.

The likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka will be in action in Tulsa as they look to claim the famous Wanamaker trophy.

Another player eyeing victory will be Jordan Speith who needs the PGA Championship title to become just the sixth player in history to complete golf’s Grand Slam.

PGA Championship 2022: The course

Designed by Perry Maxwell in the 1930s, Southern Hills will play a par of 71 and will be 7,481 yards in length.

It was restored by Gil Hanse in 2019 to its current condition and now reflects Maxwell’s original vision.

The 1st and 18th are brilliant holes but it’s the short par-4 17th that may decide the tournament.

The 7th is one of the hardest holes on the course while the 12th is regarded as one of the finest par 4s in golf.

The 2007 PGA Championship was held at Southern Hills and played shorter than this year at 7,131 yards.

Woods won it with a score of -8 ahead of Woody Austin while only five players finished under par.

PGA Championship 2022: Will Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson play?

The PGA of America are still listing Woods AND Mickelson in the field to play at the tournament but question marks remain over both.

While Woods impressed at the Masters, he was clearly feeling the strain of his injuries and is unsure whether he’ll be able to compete.

Following his final round in Augusta, he said: “I don’t know if I’ll be able to play Southern Hills or not, but I am looking forward to St. Andrews. And so that is something that is near and dear to my heart. I’ve won two Opens there, it’s the home of golf and it’s my favorite golf course in the world. So I will be there for that one.

“But anything in between that, I don’t know. I will try, there’s no doubt, I will try and get ready for Southern Hills and we’ll see what this body is able to do.”

Meanwhile, Mickelson continues to attract controversy and has requested a release from the PGA Tour to play the first LIV Golf Invitational Series event in June.

He has registered for the PGA Championship and the US Open at Brookline, which takes place the week after the first LIV Golf event at Centurion Club outside London.

Mickelson has been taking a break from golf since the fall-out from his explosive comments about the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed breakaway spearheaded by Greg Norman.

The left-hander’s agent, Steve Loy, released a statement which read: “Our client Phil Mickelson is officially registered to play in the PGA Championship as well as the US Open.

“We have also filed a request on his behalf for a release to play at the first LIV Golf Invitational in London, June 9-11. This request complies with the deadline of April 25 set forth by the PGA Tour to compete in a conflicting tour event.

“Phil currently has no concrete plans on when and where he will play. Any actions taken are in no way a reflection of a final decision made, but rather to keep all options open.”
