Portage County area amateur golf news and notes for June 5

With most schools out for the summer, attention for junior golfers turns to golf courses across northeast Ohio, competing in junior tournaments and honoring their skills for the OHSAA fall season.

Liam Curtis of Kent, a sophomore at Kent Roosevelt when he tees off for the Rough Riders in the fall, started his season with a victory in the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Tournament boys 16-19 age division at Lake Forest Country Club in Hudson.

Curtis was consistent, firing a 1-over par on the front and 2-over par on the back nine that bested runner-up, Trey Lautenschleger of Dover, by two strokes.

Other local boys in the 16-19 division included Max Devins of Aurora, who was 11th, and Cole Hostetler of Rootstown, who was 14th in the 54-player field.

Maddie Kost (fifth) and Sydnie Leavery (eighth), both of Kent, earned top 10 finishes in the girls 16-19 age division.

Grace Vidovic of Aurora tied for seventh place in the girls 11-15 age division.

Junior PGA Section Championship

The Northern Ohio PGA Junior Section Championship that advances junior golfers to the National Junior PGA Championship is set to tee off at Westfield Country Club on Monday and concludes at Portage Country Club on Tuesday.
