Seabury Hall’s Nikki Fernando won her quarterfinal match before bowing out in the semifinals of the HMSA/HHSAA State Tennis Championships at Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch on Friday.
Fernando, the Maui Interscholastic League girls singles champion, started the day with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Mid-Pacific’s Margaret Hoe, the No. 7 seed, in their quarterfinal.
That set up a semifinal showdown between Fernando, the No. 3 seed, and top-seeded Elise Wong of Punahou. Fernando gave Wong her toughest challenge yet of the tournament — the Buff ‘n Blue standout had dropped just four games total through her first three state matches — before Wong eventually prevailed 6-2, 6-3.
Fernando will face Kalaheo’s Larissa Teramura today for third place.
Finals and third-place matches are scheduled to start at 8:30 am today at Royal Lahaina. All four finals will feature all-Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchups, with six of eight finalists from Punahou.
MIL champions Justin Powell of Baldwin and Hie Luna-Beamer and Jordyn Luna of Maui High were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Powell, the No. 5 seed in boys singles, dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to top-seeded Payton Jim On of Punahou. Luna-Beamer and Luna, the No. 7 seed in girls doubles, had their state run ended by the Buff ‘n Blue’s Jariahlyn Rhoades and Sophia Woofter, the No. 3-seeded team.
