Shooting causes cancellation of popular Lynn basketball tourney

A basketball tournament that is a longstanding tradition in Lynn has been canceled after a shooting broke out during the event in the Massachusetts city. Lynn police said the shooting happened at about 10:40 pm Friday outside the Thurgood Marshall Middle School, where the Shoe City Classic was taking place. Neighbors told NewsCenter 5’s Danae Bucci that they heard at least three gunshots come from the Marshall Middle School parking lot. Video from a nearby surveillance camera shows dozens of people running into the street around the time the shooting happened. No one was struck by a bullet, but police said a vehicle was struck by gunfire. The woman who was driving that vehicle suffered minor injuries when she was hit by shattered glass.No arrests have been made at this time.”We are relieved that no one was seriously injured last night, but extremely disappointed by the violence that happened at yesterday’s basketball tournament,” Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson said in a statement that was released Saturday.In his statement, Nicholson said organizers of the Shoe City Classic decided that a modified tournament schedule was not workable and decided to cancel the rest of the event.”While we are very disappointed that this happened and the consequences, including the loss of a beloved tournament, we must continue to put everyone’s safety first,” the mayor said. “We very much appreciate the longtime commitment and leadership of the tournament organizers. We also feel for those impacted by last night’s traumatic events.”This year’s Shoe City Classic was the 30th edition of the tournament. The tournament was originally scheduled to be held at the Marian Gardens basketball courts, but the event was moved indoors at Marshall Middle School due to the hot and humid weather. Nicholson said the shooting is being investigated by Lynn and state police.
