‘Snow, Snow, Go Away’ track meet sees Rugby state qualifiers | News, Sports, Jobs

Organizers gave a class B track meet at Shiloh Christian High School in Bismarck on April 28 a name that was on the minds of almost everyone there.

The Shiloh Christian “Snow, Snow Go Away” meet welcomed the Rugby Panthers and nine other teams from all over North Dakota eager to get its outdoor track and field season going before going to the state tournament later in May.

The Rugby Panthers’ girls led all teams in point totals with 145 ½ and saw two participants qualify for state at the meet.

Rugby’s Janikka Miller qualified for a place at state with her first-place high jump of 5 feet, 2 inches. Ella Teammate Ashley Martodam, a co-op student from Towner, qualified for state in the triple jump, her first-place finish measuring 35 feet, 3 inches. Martodam also earned a place at state with her second-place finish in the hurdles with a time of 16.75 seconds.

“We finally had a beautiful day to compete, which showed how well our kids did,” Panthers Girls’ Coach Bill Jansen said, adding he was “very happy for our qualifiers and looking forward to nice weather and more qualifiers.”

The Panthers’ boys finished in second place for their division with a point total of 95.5. Riley Tuenge threw the javelin 149 feet, 7 inches for the second place in that event. Lathan DeMontigny took second place with a 5 foot, 10 inch jump, while Kory Vetsch’s 11 foot, 6 inch pole vault earned him second place in that event. The Panthers boys saw no state-qualifying scores in the meet.

Jansen said the shortened schedule for both Panthers girls and boys would be “very busy” for the rest of the season. Rugby hosts its first home meet on May 3.
