Three picks for The British Masters including 100/1 wild card

THE British Masters at The Belfry could easily reward punters who like to try their luck on players at big odds. The bookmakers do not seem to know what to make of this event.

Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, a player who has just one DP World Tour victory – in a weakly-contested event in Cyprus – shares favoritism with Adrian Meronk, who is still seeking his first win.

Richard Bland is defending at the British Masters

MacIntyre clearly has tons of promise, and Poland’s Meronk is in good form, with third place finishes in his last two starts.

But even though both are reasonably priced at around 22-1, I would prefer to look elsewhere.

Defending champion Richard Bland would be a popular winner on his 500th DP World Tour start. But after one win in his previous 499 starts, that may be asking a bit too much!

Tips for British Masters

Hot shot – Laurie Canter, 28-1.

Canter is a slightly tentative choice, as he has squandered quite a few winning opportunities over the last two years.

But I was impressed by the way he struck at it despite a couple of costly double bogeys when he finished third in Spain last week, and he has shown great consistency since a missed cut at Abu Dhabi in his first start of 2022.

The likeable Englishman also shot four sub-par rounds when he got his first look at the Belfry last year, finishing a highly respectable joint 30th. He will be far better prepared this time for the challenges posed by the former Ryder Cup venue.

Middle price: Adrian Otaegui, 40-1.

Otaegui’s odds look too big for a player who finished runner-up at the ISPS Handa a couple of weeks ago. Okay, I missed the cut last week, but that was understandable after the disappointment of just missing out on a fourth DP World Tour win.

He did nothing wrong at the ISPS Handa. He shot his third 66 of the week in the final round, only to be pipped by fellow Spaniard Pablo Larrazabal, who finished with a stroming 62.

Otaegui also finished fifth in Qatar and third in Ras al Khaimah recently. Spanish golfers have been red hot in the last couple of weeks, with wins for Larrazabal, Jon Rahm, and Adri Arnaus, and the trend could easily continue at the Belfry.

Long shot – Victor Dubuisson, 100-1

You never quite know what you are going to get with Dubuisson, as the former Ryder Cup star is definitely one of golf’s genuine oddballs. But when he is in the mood, he is still VERY good.

He prefers fishing to golf these days, but showed he still has plenty of game when he finished fourth in Abu Dhabi, against much stronger opposition than this.

Typically, that was followed by a missed cut in Dubai, and another long break from the game. But at three figure odds, he looks like a dangerous outsider.
