RED DEVILS PLOT $183M DOUBLE SWOOP … BUT THERE’S A TWIST

It’s been one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer, but it finally appears that new Manchester United boss will get his man.

The Athleticreports that the Red Devils have agreed to a $AUD110 million fee with Barcelona to secure Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The 25-year-old has been ten Hag’s top target and it now looks likely the two will reunite having worked together at Ajax.

However, the deal isn’t officially over the line yet.

De Jong needs to be won over by ten Hag’s pitch that United is the best club for him.

There’s also the added complication that Barcelona still owes the midfielder $25 million in deferred wages, yet another financial complication staring the Spanish giants in the face given they are already face debts of over $1.7 billion.

De Jong isn’t the only player that ten Hag wants a meeting with, as United looks set to sign Argentinian centre-back Lisandro Martinez from Ajax.

Guardian claims the transfer fee will be $73 million plus add-ons as discussions between the two clubs continue over the structure of the payments.

Martinez joined Ajax in July 2019 after plying his trade in the Argentinian top flight and was also heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in this transfer window, although that will not materialize.

GUNNERS EYE UP ETIHAD DOUBLE-DIP

While the Gunners couldn’t bring in Martinez, one man they are now looking to bring in is Manchester City ace Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The Ukrainian, who plays as a midfielder for country but often deputises as a left-back for club, would be the second player to switch from the Etihad to the Emirates after Gabriel Jesus’ recent move.

The Athleticreports that Arsenal is in contact with City over a potential move for Zinchenko, but no move will be sanctioned unless the Gunners meet the transfer valuation for the 25-year-old.

Zinchenko would be no stranger to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, as the two reportedly had a strong relationship when Arteta was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at City before he moved to Arsenal.

Should Zinchenko depart, it would leave City perilously thin at the left-back spot although they are linked with a move for Brighton’s Marc Cucurella.

$35M LIVERPOOL FLOP HEADED TO THE HARBOR CITY?

The A-League Men’s could land its second former Premier League player in quick succession, with former Liverpool player Lazar Markovic reportedly set to sign for Australian powerhouse Sydney FC.

The Sydney Morning Heraldclaims Markovic, the man who the Reds shelled out $35 million for but struggled to make his mark, is close to signing for the Sky Blues after leaving Serbian side Partizan Belgrade.

The 28-year-old made 19 appearances for Liverpool in his five years at the club, although all of those in his first season at the club as the others were spent on loan with Fenerbache, Sporting CP, Hull City and Anderlecht.

Markovic’s potential signature would come hot on the heels of Melbourne Victory snapping up former Manchester United star Nani.
