Why is Floyd Mayweather fighting Don Moore in Dubai? Big payday awaits retired former champion for 2022 boxing fight

In 2017, Floyd Mayweather retired as an undefeated boxer. There is a saying that is often a fact when it comes to combat sports: Never say never. While “Money” will not be heading back into the ring for championship-level fights, that hasn’t stopped him from competing in exhibition bouts.

Mayweather will face Don Moore on the Burj Al Arab Hotel helipad in Dubai on May 14. This will be Mayweather’s third exhibition fight, and first since fighting Logan Paul in Miami in June 2021.

The 45-year-old has been extremely busy since beating Conor McGregor to go 50-0, whether it’s exhibition bouts or owning an entertainment business. He has made a lot of money from these ventures, even as he spends a lot on cars and clothes.

Why exactly is Mayweather fighting Moore then?

“I am always trying to push the envelope and if something is brought to my attention that has a unique aspect to it, I am always interested,” Mayweather said in a news release. “Having a fight on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai and the opportunity to be the star of the show is going to be something I will always remember. People all over the world can buy the PPV and watch us fight high above, almost in the sky.”

A bronze medalist in the 1996 Olympics, Mayweather made his pro debut that year. The man once called “Pretty Boy” has won titles in the super-featherweight, lightweight, welterweight and light-middleweight divisions. I have retired with a record of 50-0 (27 KOs). Mayweather has faced some of the most legendary fighters in the world, including Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Jose Luis Castillo, Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley. He initially retired in 2015 after beating Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto before returning to fight McGregor.

Mayweather reportedly made about $9 million in an exhibition bout against Tenshin Nasukawa. Against Paul, Mayweather was guaranteed $10 million in base salary. Speaking with Fight Hype, Mayweather talked about remaining relevant in boxing and not paying attention to critics.

“I was able to leave boxing on my own terms and now the boxing critics are upset that I am still able to milk and finesse the sport of boxing by throwing exhibitions,” Mayweather said, via the Mirror. “Sixteen minutes and I am able to get eight and nine figures from the fruits of my labor. Once again I am not hurting for my money, I am far from hurting for money. I didn’t withdraw from getting money.”

The active Mayweather faces off against Moore, who competed in the ring from 1999 to 2016. He was trained by Floyd’s late uncle Roger Mayweather and was Floyd’s former sparring partner. The last time he fought was in 2016, beating DeShaun Williams via knockout.
